The Water and Fire project, co-led by CR&DALL Director Anna Wilson, used a range of participatory processes to mobilise local knowledges and place literacies about climate-change exacerbated hazards in South Africa’s Cape Flats. In the latest publication from the project, led by Prof Laurence Piper, the team describes how they engaged local authorities and other stakeholders with both key findings and the community co-researchers who generated them.

The second Issue of the Journal of Adult Education is launched at a time when communities on the African continent and beyond continue to experience difficult, and often extremely harsh, socioeconomic issues. We live in a time of unprecedented climate change which is affecting farmers worldwide and limiting food production. In addition to this, the war in Ukraine has had a devastating impact on supplies and prices globally.
Professor Ellen Boeren gave a keynote presentation at the Lifelong Learning Conference, which took place in Brussels on 17 and 18 April 2024. A new book "Adult Education and Social Justice: International Perspectives" was published just before Xmas 2023 in honour of the adult educator par excellence, Professor Lalage Bown, who died just over two years ago. Edited by Maria Slowey, Heribert Hinzen, Michael Omolewa and myself, it contains contributions from many esteemed adult educators, many from the core CR&DALL team and others beyond, particularly those with connections to Africa.
Core CR&DALL member Anna Wilson, University of Glasgow, has recently launched a new project funded by the UK's EPSRC through the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre. CC(U)S Futures is a collaboration between staff at the University of Glasgow, University of Stirling and University of Strathclyde. It is developing Place-Based Participatory Speculative Fiction as a tool for exploring workforce understandings of and imaginary constructions about the possible impacts on local landscapes and lives resulting from large-scale implementation of carbon capture, use and storage (CC(U)S) technologies.
We are happy to announce the opening of the call for papers for a panel “Adult learning and education for a socially just society: appraising policy and practice” hosted within the 3rd Scuola Democratica Conference to be held in Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy) in June 3-4-5-6, 2024. The purpose of this panel is to encourage debate and progress on researching how adult education policy and learning practices at local, national and international levels contribute to, or hamper, the development of a more socially just society.
