The International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) was founded in 1973 after a group of colleagues like Roby Kidd from Canada, Paul Mhaiki from Tanzania, Helmuth Dolff from Germany and Paul Bertelson from UNESCO headquarters had met a year before for CONFINTEA III in Tokyo. They agreed to work towards a global civil society based organisation bringing national and regional associations in adult learning and education together.

Ever since the work of ICAE has been recognized for its engagements, most recently through the induction into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame.  

2023 is the 50th anniversary year which is celebrated during the 11th ICAE World Assembly - Towards a learning planet during 27th November and 1st December in Bali. Details of the programme can be downloaded from  www.icae-wa2023.com

There are two important documents which were prepared advancing the World Assembly and are featured below and attached herewith:

• ICAE - 50 years in adult learning and education: With support from the ICAE member EAEA (European Association for the Education of Adults) a group of colleagues worked on a document which is highlighting certain areas, dates, documents and personalities that were involved in the ICAE history;
   
• The ICAE Report 2020 - 2023 covers the very important period of the last three years with all the activities around the UNESCO Futures of Education, CONFINTEA VII and Civil Society Forum as well as a number of advocacy, policy and capacity building activities where ICAE and its members engaged.
