Renewed drive for food security through refreshed strategy

The Global Food Security (GFS) programme has launched a refreshed strategy that focuses on a number of key future priorities. The new approach was unveiled at a Parliamentary event to highlight the success in bringing research funders together to tackle food security challenges.  You can read more about it here.

The rise of the food bank

CR&DALL is delighted to be working with Ewan Gurr, Scotland Development Officer for The Trussell Trust at the upcoming EcCoWell conference on 5 December.  The Trussell Trusts works to empower local communities to combat poverty and exclusion in the UK and recently they have been instrumental in setting up food banks. Food banks are now The Trussell Trust's biggest project.

Peer suggests redirecting funds for organic farming to research

In a debate on genetically modified food in the House of Lords on 17 October, Lib Dem peer Dick Taverne asked Conservative peer Rupert Ponsonby whether he would lobby the farming minister to “transfer the millions of pounds that are available for conversion to organic farming...to our first-class research institutes such as Rothamsted and the John Innes Centre”.

Ponsonby replied that the government's recently announced agri-tech strategy would "go a long way towards achieving the objectives that [Taverne] desires”. The strategy was published on 22 July and pledged £160 million for agricultural innovation centres and collaborative R&D projects.

During the debate, Ponsonby said that GM was one of several “tools in the box” in food technology, and agreed that funding research is an effective way of tackling the issue of food security around the world.

The Glasgow Centre for International Development are hosting a free public seminar on Tuesday 15 October. Professor Tim Benton, University of Leeds and UK Food Security Champion will explore issues around global food security and the major drivers at a macro level - economic and population growth and climate change.
