We are pleased to share the second issue of our newsletter for 2017.
Building a learning city is a collective and continuous journey. Amid various challenges, local governments are in the frontline of implementing education and lifelong learning, as well as achieving sustainable development for their communities. To reinforce our quest for local solutions, we are gathering with mayors, policy-makers and scholars at the forthcoming third International Conference on Learning Cities in Cork, Ireland, where we will also launch our latest publication Unlocking the Potential of Urban Communities. Volume II. Case Studies of Sixteen Learning Cities and confer the UNESCO Learning City Award 2017 on 16 cities.
The conference will involve speakers from all over the world, including important figures such as the President of the General Conference of UNESCO. Together with the participants, they will provide valuable insights and trigger important discussions on how lifelong learning can support implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at local level. Unfortunately, registration has now closed, but we warmly encourage you to join the conversation on social media like Twitter using #learningcities2017 and to follow our conference live stream, through the website www.learningcities2017.org.
It is not only Cork that is in action, we are pleased to see many cities active in regional communication about the possibilities for transformation. The Villa María Declaration, consolidated during the event ‘Learning to Live Sustainably in Cities’, sheds light on regional approaches for learning cities in Latin America and the Caribbean, and similar events will be held in the Asia-Pacific region: Suwon will host a major international event on adult learning and education and Gwangmyeong is organizing a regional workshop on learning cities in October 2017.
Enjoy reading more about these and other developments in this newsletter.
