Abstract: |
Rethinking global education today requires a serious examination of the tension between past promises and uncertain futures. Retrospective and prospective analysis makes plain the dual challenge of equity and relevance in education globally. The challenge of equity has to do with the exclusions we inherit from the past and the continued denial of the right to quality education for too many children, youth, and adults. The second challenge has to do with relevance of learning, or the unrealized transformational potential of education as a route to sustainable collective futures at a time of accelerated environmental and technological disruptions. We are at a turning point with both risk and opportunity, fears and hopes. Changing course will require a new social contract for education that can repair present injustices while transforming the future. Building on the analysis and proposals of the International Commission on the Futures of Education, the keynote will outline the proposed vision and principles of this new social contract, as well as the implications for the organization of learning. |
