This presentation is based on an ongoing research project on the bibliometrics of education research. As a case study, we have focused on five ”international" adult education and workplace learning journals, identifying who is citing who.

Thus, we have been able on the one hand, to illustrate patterns of dominance regarding geographical affiliation of authors, and on the other hand, dominance of patterns regarding what kind of research is construed as worth citing (in terms of theory, methodology etc.).

In this presentation, I will illustrate some of our main findings, and raise discussion about how come the ”international” journals are so dominated by researchers from countries of the former "British empire", as well as why sociocultural inspired research is so dominant. Such findings will be related to a discussion about the economy of publication and citations, an economy not the least prominently operating at UK as well as Swedish universities.

Andreas Fejes is professor and chair of adult education research as well as pro-dean for research and doctoral studies at the faculty of education, Linköping University, Sweden. His research interests are currently related to 1. The bibliometrics of education research; 2. Citizenship education within and beyond education institutions; 3. Marketization of education. He has published more than 100 research articles and book chapters, as well as several co-authored and co-edited books, e.g. with Routledge: ”The confessing society: Foucault, confession and practices of lifelong education (2013, with M. Dahlstedt) and "Foucault and a politics of confession in education" (2015, With K. Nicoll).
