We are very pleased to be part of this ERASMUS intensive programme on adult and lifelong learning, part-funded by the European Commission within its Lifelong Learning Programme at Julius-Maximilians-Universität, Würzburg, Germany from February 9-22, 2014.

The University of Glasgow has received 10 places for its students, each 90% funded, all of which have been taken up by our Masters students programmes in Community Development, Educational Studies and TESOL.

The other participating universities are:

• Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal;
• Universita degli Studidi Firenze, Italy;
• Pecs I Tudományegyetem, Hungary;
• TU Chemnitz, Germany

The programme will explore international policies, particularly from the European Union, and their effects on national policies. The programme is designed to create a forum for learning and discussion between international students and scholars and for international comparisons. There will also be opportunities for field visits to adult education centres around Würzburg, Germany for students to research the influence of international ideas of lifelong learning on the practice of adult education in the host country. The intended learning outcomes of the programme are for students to be able to:

• Critically assess international policies in lifelong learning, and their influence on adult education national policies and practice.
• Understand theoretical frameworks for the analysis of international strategies in lifelong learning.
• Compare the national lifelong learning strategies of different European countries.
• Develop an insight into the adult education policy and practice of the host country
• Develop international contacts between masters students and scholars in adult education, develop an insight into the policy and practice of adult education in other European countries, practise their English skills and develop students’ intercultural competences.
