The BALID committee has been very busy recently, and as a result we have three events for your delectation. ;-)
'Tackling the Literacy Challenge through Context-Specific Approaches’, Oxford, 27th March As part of the World Literacy Summit(link is external), we are holding this symposium presented by Juliet McCaffery, Katy Newell-Jones and Ian Cheffy. Please note that the detailed summit timetable has not yet been released, so we are not 100% certain of the time of the BALID symposium. Make sure you register on line(link is external), so you can enjoy the full programme of events at the summit.
'Orality meets literacy in Manjaku of Guinea-Bissau’, London, 24th April, 4-6pm In this, our 30th Informal Literacy Discussion(link is external), Dr Jill Karlik will explore how oral story-telling leads to orthography development and much else besides. This promises to be a fascinating seminar about literacy in a language that spans three west African states: The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. Yet again Feed the Minds is kindly offering us space at The Foundry, 17 Oval Way, London SE11 5RR.
'Models of Literacy Learning', SOAS University of London, 17th May, 2-6pm This seminar is kindly hosted by SOAS and will focus on the purpose, function and communicative practices of literacy learning in multilingual communities. Our panellists are Professor Leketi Makalela(link is external) (Wits University, South Africa) and Professor Friederike Lüpke(link is external) (SOAS). A flyer and booking form will be sent to you shortly.
