Adult Learning Australia | Adult Learners Week - 1-8 Sept, 2020

STARTS NEXT WEEK! Festival Program of Events featured below.

Adult Learners Week is celebrated at the beginning of Spring with hundreds of events and activities promoting the benefits of learning. There are so many opportunities to learn available across Australia.

Adult Learners Week is a UNESCO initiative supported in Australia by the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training and coordinated by Adult Learning Australia(link is external). Adult Learners Week runs from 1–8 September and incorporates International Literacy Day, which is celebrated annually on September 8.

Adult Learners Week in Australia is part of an international festival of adult learning.

The move to create a broad celebration of adult learning began with the American Association for the Advancement of Education (AAAE) in the late 1980s. In 1990, governments met in Jomtien for the Education for All world conference. The aim of this conference was to set goals for:

  • universal access to and completion of primary education
  • reducing the adult illiteracy rate to one half its 1990 level by 2000.

Adult education is more important than ever!

Right now many adult Australians are experiencing difficult times and challenges. As education providers, you know that learning transforms people – it offers a life line and opportunities for renewal.

That's why we are so excited to announce this year's theme:

‘Renew You’

Our theme is all about the positive impact of learning (upskilling or whatever you want to call it). It's about how education can help people navigate tricky times – both socially and economically.

Help us make a difference

People need access to education, learning and training at every stage of their lives so they can build skills and knowledge, fulfil their own potential and contribute effectively in their communities.

Adult Learners Week is all about promoting these ideas and highlighting the awesome work of the adult education sector.

We’re inviting adult education providers around Australia to nominate adult learners(link is external) whose commitment and motivation makes them stand out from the rest. We’re looking for adults for whom learning has made a big difference in their lives.

We had amazing scholarship entrants last year. Plus, it's so easy to nominate your adult learners(link is external), so get your applications in.
